App Name & Developer

App Name: Sun Hours for Solar Panels — kWh Calculator

Developer: Andy

At a glance

  • The solar calculator works without an account. Your settings, location and readings stay on your device.
  • Two things are optional: helping improve the weather model and Solar Wars. Joining Solar Wars also turns on weather-model sharing, which helps improve Sun Hours.
  • Other Solar Wars players only see what you choose to share.
  • Weather-model sharing carries your location rounded to about 11 km — never your address or postcode. Solar Wars stores no location at all.
  • We never sell your data. Shared records are deleted after 3 years, or sooner when you switch sharing off or delete your Solar Wars account.

On your device

  • Settings and readings. Your panel details, forecasts and any actual generation you log are stored on your device.
  • Location. You tell the app where your panels are by typing a town, postcode or address, by choosing a spot on a map, or by tapping the location button. The location button asks the phone for an approximate position only when you tap it, never in the background, and on Android the app declares approximate location only. A UK postcode is sent to postcodes.io; any other search, and the short place name shown for a map pin or a phone position, goes to OpenStreetMap. The resulting coordinates are stored on your device and used to fetch weather data.
  • Backups. If you turn on backup, a copy of your settings and readings is kept in your own iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive app folder (Android), where only you and the app can read it. On a new phone the app can offer to restore it. We never see these backups.

Helping improve the weather model (optional)

One switch in the app — Help improve the weather model, on the Forecast Accuracy card — controls whether your generation is used to improve forecasts. It is off by default and is turned on when you join Solar Wars in the app (which also switches on actual-generation logging, as sharing needs it), or when you accept the one-time invite on the History screen.

While it is on, the app shares:

  • the date, the forecast kWh and the actual kWh you logged, and your panel peak / best-day reference;
  • your location rounded on your device to a 0.1° grid (about 11 km) before it is sent;
  • which weather provider, model and app version made the forecast, time-stamped forecast snapshots, and how much the forecast changed during the day.

These records are keyed by a random device identifier created by the app — no account, name or email. This is the only data the weather model learns from: Solar Wars data is never used for it, so your days are counted once even if you also play.

Switching it off — on the Forecast Accuracy card, at any time — stops sharing and deletes these records from our servers straight away. Solar Wars keeps working. We rely on your consent for this use, and you can withdraw it at any time.

Solar Wars (optional)

Solar Wars is an optional county leaderboard. Joining requires Sign in with Apple, and joining in the app also turns on weather-model sharing, which helps improve Sun Hours; you can turn that off at any time without leaving Solar Wars. Your Solar Wars data itself is used only to run the game.

We store:

  • the identifier Apple provides for this app — not your name or email address;
  • the username, county (UK) or country, avatar and profile visibility you choose;
  • each completed day's forecast kWh, your panel peak and, if you log it, your actual kWh (logged in the app), which confirms the day's score. No location is stored.

What other players see: only what you choose to share — your username and your county or country, plus your XP and trophies if you make your profile public. Your generation readings are never shown individually.

Deleting your account (in the app, or the Me tab at sunhours.app/solarwars) permanently removes your profile and every synced day, and signs you out. It does not turn off weather-model sharing or delete that data — turn it off on the Forecast Accuracy card to do that. To also remove Sun Hours from your Apple Account, go to Settings → your name → Sign in with Apple on your iPhone.

Third-party services

  • Google AdMob: Collects device advertising ID and usage data for ad personalisation. See Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Weather and irradiance providers: Open-Meteo, MET Norway, Bright Sky (DWD) and NASA POWER receive latitude/longitude to return forecasts and solar irradiance; PVGIS (European Commission) receives it for the optional roof-geometry estimate. No account required for any of them.
  • postcodes.io: Receives a UK postcode to return coordinates.
  • OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and map tiles): Receives a place search, or the coordinates of a map pin or phone position to name it, and serves the map in the location picker. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.
  • Apple iCloud and Google Drive: Hold your optional backup in your own account. See Apple's and Google's privacy policies.
  • Apple (Sign in with Apple): Used only if you join Solar Wars. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
  • Cloudflare: Hosts this website and stores shared data on our behalf.

Data Retention

  • Shared daily records (weather-model sharing and Solar Wars days) are deleted automatically 3 years after the day they describe, or sooner when you switch sharing off or delete your Solar Wars account.
  • Solar Wars profiles are kept until you delete them.
  • Statistical summaries. We retain closed-month statistical summaries permanently to study seasonal and geographic performance. Each retained group requires at least 10 contributing device identifiers and 50 device-days; these summaries contain no device identifiers, individual readings or precise locations. They remain after individual records are deleted. Coarse regional results are suppressed where contributor thresholds are not met.
  • Backups. Nightly backups are kept for up to 90 days, so deleted records leave them within that time. Backups are stored with Cloudflare in Eastern North America; everything else is held in Cloudflare's global network.
  • Uninstalling the app does not delete server data by itself — switch sharing off or delete your Solar Wars account first.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to access, correct or delete your data, and withdraw consent at any time. Deletion is built into the app because shared accuracy records are not linked to your identity. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children (COPPA / GDPR-K)

This app is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
